Why Your Garage Door Will Not Open

Start With Power
It is worth ruling out the dull explanation first. Garage openers are frequently on a circuit shared with outdoor outlets, so a tripped GFCI or breaker after a storm can leave the unit completely dead with nothing else in the house affected. Check that the light on the motor housing comes on and that anything else plugged into the same outlet works.
If the opener has a battery backup, listen for a beep or look for a status light. A backup running on a tired battery can behave erratically, moving the door slowly or refusing to start, which looks a lot like a motor fault from the ground.
The Opener Runs but the Door Stays Put
When the motor hums or runs its full travel while the door does not move at all, the connection between the two has failed. On a chain or belt drive that is usually a stripped drive gear or a trolley that has come off the carriage. On a screw drive it can be a sheared coupler.
It is also what you see when somebody has pulled the manual release and forgotten. Look at the trolley above the door: if the release arm is hanging disengaged, re-engaging it with the door fully closed will often solve the whole problem.
A Broken Spring Is the Most Likely Cause
If the opener strains, hums for a second and gives up, or if the door lifts a few inches and stops, suspect the springs. Look at the shaft above the opening for a clean gap in the coil, or along the side tracks for a stretched spring that has separated.
This is the point to stop. A door with a broken spring is unsupported weight. Do not run the opener again to see if it catches, do not pull the release while the door is raised, and do not try to lift it by hand to judge how heavy it is. Keep vehicles and people out from under the opening until it has been looked at.
The Door Is Jammed or Off Its Track
A door stuck at an angle, with one section bulging away from the vertical track, has come off its rollers. Common causes are a car reversing into the bottom section, a cable that unwound and dropped one side, or rollers that had already collapsed.
Forcing it makes everything worse. Levering a section back with the spring still under tension can drop the door or bend the track beyond straightening. Leave it where it is and describe the position it is stuck in when you call.
Remotes, Keypads and Wall Buttons
If the wall button works but the remote does not, the problem is the remote: a flat battery, a lost code after a power event, or a receiver antenna that has been bent or broken off. Reprogramming usually takes a couple of minutes.
If nothing works, including the wall button, and the motor is definitely powered, the logic board or the wiring to the button is the next suspect. A vacation or lock mode left switched on is worth ruling out too, since it disables remotes while leaving the wall control live.
When the Power Is Out
Central Texas gets this more often than people expect. The ice storm at the start of February 2023 left large parts of Williamson County without electricity for days, and every one of those households had to get a car out of a garage with no opener.
The safe method is simple, and it only works with the door fully closed. Pull the release cord straight down to disconnect the trolley, then lift the door steadily with both hands. A door in good balance will feel manageable and will stay where you leave it. If it feels dead heavy or immediately drops, the springs have failed and you should stop.

The cause tends to track the age of the neighborhood. In the newer subdivisions off US-79 and SH-45, the overwhelming majority of no-lift calls turn out to be a builder-grade torsion spring that has reached its cycle count. In older parts of the area it is more often an ageing opener, a worn drive gear or a door that has gradually gone out of balance over years.
Single-story homes bring their own version of the problem. In Georgetown, where Sun City homes often have a golf-cart bay alongside the main door, a failure can take out the only practical way in and out of the house, which changes how urgent the visit is.
