Two Ways to Carry the Same Weight
A sectional garage door weighs far more than most people assume, and the opener is not what lifts it. The springs do that. The motor only supplies the small push needed to move a door that is already balanced, which is why a healthy door can be raised by hand with one arm and a failed one cannot be shifted at all.
Torsion springs do that job by twisting. They sit on a steel shaft mounted horizontally above the opening, wind up as the door comes down, and unwind to help it rise. Extension springs stretch instead. They run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the garage, pulled longer as the door closes and contracting to assist the lift.
How to Tell Which System You Have
Stand inside the garage with the door closed and look straight up at the wall above the opening. A thick spring or a pair of springs wound around a shaft, with cable drums at each end, means torsion. If that space is empty and you find long, thinner springs running back along the ceiling parallel to the tracks, the door is on extension springs.
Extension systems are more common on older doors and on lighter single-car doors. Torsion is standard on most doors fitted in the last twenty-five years and on anything wide or insulated, because it handles weight more evenly and keeps the door from rocking as it travels.
What Happens When One Breaks
A torsion spring usually announces itself with a single loud bang, often overnight when the metal has cooled and contracted. Afterwards there is a visible gap of an inch or two in the coil, the door refuses to lift, and an opener that tries will strain, hum and stop.
An extension spring failure is less contained. A stretched spring under tension that snaps can travel across the garage, which is exactly why containment cables were made standard. Older doors sometimes have no containment cable at all, and on those the safest response is to stay out of the garage and leave the door where it is.
Cycle Ratings Are the Number That Matters
Springs are rated in cycles, not years. One cycle is one full open and close. A standard residential spring is commonly rated around ten thousand cycles, which sounds enormous until you count actual use: a household opening the door six times a day gets through that in roughly four and a half years.
That arithmetic explains most of the surprise when a door that is not old breaks a spring. It also explains why higher-cycle springs are worth asking about. They cost a little more, look almost identical, and can double or triple the working life on a door that is used as the family’s main entrance.
Is Converting to Torsion Worth It?
Sometimes, but it should be a considered decision rather than an automatic upgrade. A conversion needs adequate headroom above the opening, a header that can carry the mounting bracket, and a new shaft, drums and cables. On a wide or heavy door where extension springs have never really coped, that work is justified.
On a light single-car door with a sound extension system and containment cables in place, it often is not. The honest question to ask is what the conversion solves at this particular garage. If the answer is only that torsion is newer, a straight replacement of the existing springs is the better value.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
From outside the door’s path, you can note whether the door is up, down or stuck part way, whether you heard a bang and whether the opener was running at the time. A clear gap in a coil is useful information. Photographs from a safe distance are more useful still.
What you should not do is adjust, unwind or remove anything. Winding bars, a secured door and knowing the exact turn count are what make spring work survivable, and none of that is improvised. Do not pull the manual release while the door is raised, and do not test the weight by lifting.
